4 million people die prematurely from chronic respiratory disease each year. The Respiratory Diseases department at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking an innovative respiratory physiologist to join the Integrated Lung Physiology group in our mission to develop transformative new therapies for patients with chronic lung diseases.
In this position, the successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary matrix environment and play a key role in creating new therapeutic opportunities for fibrotic lung diseases. The candidate will develop and characterize novel mechanistic models of fibrotic lung diseases for use in the validation of novel therapeutic targets and support progression of therapeutics that halt progression of pro-fibrotic signaling, promote clearance of fibrotic tissue and enable lung repair.
Contribute to devising and testing new target concepts to treat fibrotic lung diseases
In this lab-based role, the candidate will directly establish and characterize novel in vivo and ex vivo models of pulmonary fibrosis using cutting-edge technologies
Devise, execute and interpret in vivo studies to advance drug discovery programs and understand mechanism of action
Develop readouts of target engagement with potential for translation to the clinic
Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Respiratory department and NIBR to identify new opportunities to target lung fibrosis
Prepare IACUC protocols and comply with all policies and procedures related to the conduct of in vivo work

PhD with 2-3 years postdoctoral training or MSc (or equivalent) in Life Sciences and 10+ years related laboratory experience in an academic or industrial drug discovery setting
Deep expertise in the biology of fibrotic signaling and tissue repair mechanisms
Experience in establishing novel rodent models of fibrotic and tissue repair processes
Hands-on expert in rodent pharmacology: compound administration, animal handling, blood sampling and tissue harvesting
Experience in a broad range of techniques such as in vivo and ex vivo tissue imaging techniques, flow cytometry, unbiased mRNA and protein analysis are also desirable
Strong team player, critical thinker and attention to detail are essential
