Position Functional Title: Research Technician supporting Plant Tissue Culture and Transformation


Our client is seeking an enthusiastic staff member to complete the Tissue Culture Team and help them accelerate the growing workload in hemp tissue culture. This Research Technician will be responsible for carrying out supporting and scientific tasks related to our Client s plant transformation and tissue culture activities for the team, that is specifically involved in the pipeline for cereals and hemp breeding. The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of plant tissue culture, plant biotechnology, plant morphology, and will receive further training in these domains. The working environment is varied: laboratory, growth chamber and office. This position will interact with all scientific team members and growth facility staff in the research, planning and delivery of various project goals with seasonal and timeline-driven deadlines.


Prepares media for plant tissue and bacterial culture; uses autoclave.
Prepares/dissects plant material for various lab studies.
Performs maintenance of plant tissue cultures under sterile conditions.
Performs plant transformation via Agrobacterium and particle bombardment, selection and regeneration of transgenic tissue.
Collects and prepares tissue samples for phenotypic/genotypic analysis and studies.
Performs seed germination tests for various lab studies, viability and segregation assays for generation advancement.
Establishes and maintains identity of seeds, plants, flats and genotype samples via stake and sticker methods.
Conducts transplanting activities (tissue culture to soil).
Utilizes various databases to maintain inventory of research plants and seeds.
Interacts with other groups to include discussions and troubleshooting with other lab members.
May be tasked with maintaining bacterial cultures.
May extract plasmid DNA from E. coli and A. tumefaciens cultures (Midi and Mini preps)
May perform PCR and run agarose electrophoresis gels.


Must be well-organized and meticulous ; demonstrating an above-average work ethic.
Experience with standard laboratory techniques such as pipetting, weighing samples, and proper use of volumetric glassware.
Research experience with agricultural crops, plant tissue culture techniques is an advantage.
Basic understanding of plant genetics, breeding and physiology is also an advantage.
Familiarity with basic molecular biology characterization techniques such as DNA extraction and PCR is an advantage.
Understands the concept of performing experiments for research or commercial use.
Has the ability to perform routine tasks under general supervision.
Has the ability to convert and apply scientific units.
Has the ability to maintain a detailed and accurate lab notebook.
Must be able to tolerate different working conditions and environments (greenhouse, growth chamber and lab).


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to contribute in writing parts of reports. Ability to contribute in effectively presenting information to the research group.


Ability to understand mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software (MS Office); will require training in internet software for bioinformatics and literature research (GenBank, PubMed, Google Scholar), and database software.


AS degree in a scientific discipline with courses such as Plant Science, Plant Biology, Plant Genetics, Horticulture or plus related field with 1 years direct work experience (industry or academia).

Must be able to occasionally lift items up to 30 lbs.
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings both on site and off site; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
