Twice a Month Position Description The COPS Office, an agency of the Department of Justice, is seeking a Database Engineer SME to assist with a DOJ Shared services grant management program currently being developed for OJP (Office of Justice Programs), COPS, and OVW (Office of Violence Against Women) components. The Database Engineer would serve a portion of his or her time as a liaison assisting the database related efforts for the new upcoming JGITS (Justice Grants IT System) system launch in October 2020 and the remainder of the time supporting database development efforts for the COPS Office. The Database Engineer is expected to also perform the following rolls Implement highly available production systems with SQL Server 2016 or greater according to guidance and specifications from the Architecture Group Implement physical databases based on the logical design Implement SQL queries and stored procedures Write SQL scripts for importing, transforming, and exporting data Assist Systems Group in resolving database performance issues and database capacity issues Manage database changes from Development to Test and Production Preferred Skills and Technologies 10+ years of experience developing databases using Microsoft SQL Server Current knowledge of MS SQL Server 2016 and greater Experience with generating and consuming XML programmatically from MS SQL queries Ability to understand and implement technical concepts Ability to recommend cost-effective creative solutions Commitment to excellence and high standards Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm Ability to work on complex projects with general direction and minimal guidance Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees Strong technical skills Transact SQL, SSIS, SQL Server Reporting Services, Business Intelligence Studio Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines Creative, flexible, and innovative team player Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban Source control tools (GitHub, TFS, Rational, Visual Studio) Education and Qualifications Associate s degree or higher in Computer Science or related fields 5+ years experience on one platform, multi-database, multi-language or multi-business application, or any combination of education and experience which would provide an equivalent background. Candidate should also have the ability to mentor others, lead small projects and provide troubleshooting support. Citizenship required in order to comply with law, regulation, executive order, or government contract.
