HJF is seeking a Research Assistant III to support the MHRP at the Viral Sequencing Core (VSC) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

The incumbent is responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory Next Generation Sequencing research projects, using one or all of the following platforms; PacBio, ION Torrent and Oxford Nanopore. Sample library preparation, collection and analysis of data at a competent and professional level. Makes detailed observations about experiments. Provides data analysis and interpretation.
  • Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  • Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures.
  • Provides quality control, troubleshooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment in the Next Generation Sequencing lab.
  • Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of one or more of the Next Generation Sequencing platforms including both laboratory and data analysis techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communication with VSC team and analytical skills

    Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelors Degree, but masters degree preferred.

    Minimum Experience: 6 - 8 years in a laboratory environment, which must include 4+ years of Next Generation Sequencing laboratory experience.

    Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

    Work Environment: Laboratory environment.

    Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
