CIRES/ NOAA GMD Atmospheric Trace-Gas Analyst PRA

TheCooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)in Boulder, Colorado is seeking anAssociate Scientist I or IIto work at the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) with its Global Monitoring Division (GMD) in the Halocarbon and Atmospheric Trace Species (HATS) Group. Our group conducts research using our measurements of over 60 trace gases, including substances that deplete stratospheric ozone, non-CO2 greenhouse gases, and hazardous air pollutants. Our group measures the atmospheric concentrations of halocarbons and other trace gases in air collected in flasks at sites around the world. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating one of the instruments and providing accurate and precise concentration measurements of these trace gases on an ongoing basis.

The initial term of the appointment is for one year, with a possibility of extension in future years.

Who We Are

At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including peoples relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earths poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

The Global Monitoring Division (GMD) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, is dedicated to acquiring, evaluating, and making available accurate, long-term records of atmospheric gases, aerosol particles, clouds, and surface radiation in a manner that allows the causes and consequences of change to be understood. We do this by regularly making high precision and high accuracy measurements of trace gases, aerosols, and surface radiation at remote sites across the globe and at regional sites across the U.S.

  • Be the primary analyst operating a gas chromatograph-electron capture detection (GC-ECD) instrument for the analysis of flask-air samples and calibration standards. Assist other group members involved with the analysis of these flask samples by gas chromatograph-mass selective detection (GC-MSD) instrumentation.
  • Provide quantitative atmospheric concentration data from the instrumental analyses by controlling instrumental results (e.g., integrating the GC peaks) for the various trace gases using laboratory software.
  • Provide primary responsibility for maintaining the stainless-steel flasks in the HATS network. Repair flasks and replace parts as necessary.
  • Act as the primary contact for shipping and handling of flasks, to and from stations, and within the group so that uninterrupted sampling on an ongoing basis is ensured. Maintain databases with metadata associated with sampling events and locations for each flask sample received by the lab.
  • Assist in running gas standards used to calibrate instruments within the HATS group and by others external to HATS.
  • Supervise student employees with operations in the flask lab.
  • Regularly communicate with scientists in HATS and GMD on the status of operations, instrument performance, results, and planning activities related to instrument or procedural modifications and use, and interpretations of results.
  • Present results obtained from this program at local and national meetings, including the HATS group meetings, the NOAA Global Monitoring Annual Conference and the CIRES Rendezvous.
